Mental health diagnoses can be given by a medical doctor or mental health professional after one or many sessions or through comprehensive psychological testing. Diagnoses must meet a certain number of criteria according to the DSM-5 and impact a certain level of functioning in that individual's life.
These individuals may be have shorten attention span, be easily distracted/forgetful, lose things often, or experience anxiety for "always forgetting to complete" their homework. I teach them organizational strategies, mindfulness strategies, develop an accountability plan to get back on track with their school or work projects.
These individuals are known for struggling socially, they may miss social cues, or easily misinterpret social situations. Typically, girls are better as "masking" or pretending to be more social than boys and can often go into adulthood without a diagnosis unless symptoms are very severe. They may also have sensory sensitivities, very responsive to lights, sounds, and feel overwhelmed easily.
These individuals have struggled in school, possibly received SPED services or been an average C student. They may be seen as not "good at listening" or "stubborn" and have difficulty grasping concepts. They can be very black or white thinkers (e.g., true/false, bad/good). I can help set them up with testing and/or provide interventions that meets them where they are at cognitively.
These children often have difficulty following directions and listening to authority figures. They may want to bend the rules or see how far they can push your boundaries. They like to test the limits and most likely have behavioral issues at school.
These individuals have experienced a trauma and remain affected by it. They may have disturbed sleep, nightmares, change in appetite, flashbacks of the memory, avoidance of any trauma reminders. They may think something is wrong with them, people are bad, or the world world is messed up.
These individuals may be your high achievers at work -- always need to stay busy. They can't stop because if they do-- they'll start to feel anxious. They might be quiet/shy side who keeps everything in or be strong leaders who are focused on everyone else but themselves. I can help to slow things down in a safe way.
Feeling sad? Hopeless? Negative thoughts about yourself or the world? Do you lack motivation, drive, energy? This can feel like being "lazy" but it could also mean that you are depressed. Even if it feels like "there is no reason" for you to be sad.. it happens so let's talk about it.
Have you ever panicked for "no reason"? You were at school, work, or grocery shopping and all of a sudden felt like you were in danger? Maybe your heart started to beat really fast, hands became sweaty, difficulty breathing, felt light-headed or dizzy even. Did you go to the hospital or felt like you should? You may have experienced a panic or anxiety attack.
These are typically accompanied by chronic pain, lifelong, no cure, only intense treatments. This may be cancer, Multiple sclerosis (MS), organ failure, from a trauma, or reason is unknown. Sessions can give you some relief from the pain, to process the grief of having a debilitating illness-- you are grieving and there is support.
